In part because I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, as well as being an educator (Brown University 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts programs first hand (Brown University) and believe that educational programs should incorporate the study of art with other subjects. There is no reason to be surprised that an ethnomusicologist holding a PhD as well as an MA from UCLA is keen on the arts. The ethnomusicology course, which began with UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is conveniently located in a music department in a College of Letters and Science. It is fun to have several subjects. I also like seeing the bigger picture. I really enjoy teaching both undergraduates (majors and non-majors) for whom I have written three textbooks: Music in India: The Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) as well as graduate students. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I focus on primarily teaching along with times when I incorporate administrative responsibilities to the mix (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of all the Deans at the College of Letters and Science 1994-1998, Chair of the Group in Asian Studies in 1999, and now as Chair of the Department of Music again).
