Contractor who was born in Mumbai and was a resident of Nigeria for seven years, had a wide range of trips and experiences in the world of culture at an early age. She went to boarding school between the ages between 7 and 9 years old in London. After that, she and her family moved back in Toronto (Canada) in Canada, where she spent her entire childhood. Contractor trained and eventually became an expert in classical dancing in Toronto. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto, a fine arts institution that focuses on dance and theater. Contractor was inspired to pursue acting seriously at age 16 after almost 10 year of dance. She accepted a full-scholarship to study at the University of Toronto after graduating. There she earned her master's in theatre, and also double-majored in sociology and psychology. Contractor was a participant in the highly acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada, for Pericles. After a full year of auditions, she was offered the leading role. Her performance was lauded in the 92 plays that she performed in. She won the award in 2002 for the Best Production of the Year by Canadian Critics. She was offered the opportunity to enroll in the Stratford Conservatory. It allows only eight males and four woman for a crash course in the art of classical theater. Contractor was eager to accept. Contractor's participation in the next play-season was confirmed and she was cast in the role of Hermia from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
